A Tale of Two Railroad Stations

Metolius was founded in the early 1900s. The earliest records are from 1903 and written in German.
In February 1911 the Oregon Trunk Railroad decided to build a depot...

...turntable and roundhouse in the town.

...the railroad was connected to Bend, Oregon.
The views in Metolius are great ...

...and the Depot overlooks them all.

The Depot here has some old memorabilia
...Other buildings...
... more great views...
...and old equipment ...

... including an office complete with a potbelly stove...

... and a kitchen...

... also a great looking loading dock

The Redmond rail station is very similar to Oregon Trunk Railway station in Bend...

... and all three are historic and architecturally significant with a combination of masonry and the porte cochere design (others include the Southern Pacific stations in Corvallis and Albany).

 I liked this stove...

  ... the loading doors...
 ... the side doors...

 ...and the "Red Dog Depot"sign.

For lunch we stopped at the Cline Falls  State Park where we could have played horse shoes...

 ...gone swimming
 ... taken a nature walk...

 ...along the river...
... filled with a few huge bolders.

We did sit under this great tree...
...and I even got a picture of a beautiful Magpie. It W@as a very goodday.

Quote of the Day ~ "As a child I found railroad stations exciting, mysterious, and even beautiful, as indeed they often were." ~ Paul Johnson
